Description | This article describes a large screen made of 12 panels, originally owned by the Liechtenstein family, now belonging to the collections of the State château Valtice. The technique used is that of Coromandel lacquer, the screen was made in the Chinese province of Fujian in the year 1683. These facts were recorded in the laudatory text carved on the reverse face of the screen, together with the names of the donors. On the averse face, there is a rich depiction of figures in a garden palace, referring to a certain Zhang Gongyi of the Hou Jin dynasty (936-946) who symbolized longevity and plentiful family. The article not only describes this scene and its decorative border, but also presents a survey of the production of Coromandel lacquers. |
