Description | The conference paper deals with the little-known fact that Czech soldiers and especially officers - former prisoners of war of the Russian army - participated in combat operations of the First Serbian Volunteer Division at the front in Dobrogea. The Czechs fought in the Serbian division in Dobrogea against Bulgarian and German troops. The article is based on the memories of Czech volunteer officers and archives. The article mentions a fact that appears both in the memoirs and in the archival material - tones of disappointment from the situation in the division after its defeat and great losses in the fighting in Dobrogea. Czech volunteers complain about the insensitive behavior of Serbian senior officers towards their soldiers, the forced recruitment of Serbian and Croatian soldiers in Russian prison camps, beatings and other punishments, and the lack of a democratic spirit in general. These facts are not sufficiently known in Serbian historiography. This was also one of the reasons why most Czech volunteers left the division. Later, these soldiers occupied leading positions in the Czechoslovak legions formed in Russia and retained these positions even after returning to their homeland. |
