Description | A substantial part of Leoš Janáček’s literary work is represented by his contributions to Lidové noviny that have been traditionally referred to as “feuilletons”. Containing clear musical inspirations – evident in the topics, in the inclusion of score extracts, or on the linguistic and literary level – they are both valuable musicological documents and original literary works. This paper focuses on the linguistic and literary qualities of the feuilletons through observing Janáček’s musical metaphors. It shows how the author combines the motifs of nature and music, how he treats the motif of a musical tone and what function his descriptions of sounds have. It demonstrates the ambiguity of musical images, which could be accurate depictions of Janáček’s sound ideas or metaphors. Such ambiguity is also presented as an efficient literary tool. |
