| Description | Leopold Hofmann (1738-1793) was an Austrian musical composer. At the age of seven, he was accepted in the band of the Dowager Empress Elisabeth Christine as a chorister. Since 1758 he probably worked as a violinist at St. Michael's church in Vienna. At that time, he was already well-known composer of symphonies, sacred compositions, and concerts for various musical instruments. When he was thirty-two years old, he became an organist and later Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Although Hofmann was forgotten during the 19th century, he was highly valued by his contemporaries. The oldest extant reflections on the life and work of the Austrian composer show how popular and played the composer was during his lifetime and just after his death. |
