Description | The paper analyses the views on martyrdom in the 13th and 14th-century Franciscan travel reports and letters from Asia, focusing on the Franciscan missions in China in the first half of the 14th century. The paper analyses the local views on martyrdom with respect to the contemporary debate over church poverty and the reflection of the expansion of Islam. The paper suggests that the local cultural and religious values and social situation affected the attitudes of local friars toward martyrdom, which seem not to be particularly favourable. |
