Description The aristocrats depicted in the portraits were presented in luxurious clothes according to the latest fashion and with appropriate jewellery accessories as an expression of representation. The depiction of jewellery in paintings is a useful source for understanding the development of the jewellery industry, as only limited material evidence survives from the past. However, Czech museums contain only a minimum of jewellery from the elite, but a large number from the bourgeoisie, especially from the 19th century. Portraits of members of the middle class have the character of smaller paintings, small paintings and miniatures. The festive dress of industrialists, merchants and successful craftsmen is complemented by actual jewellery. In this way we gain information not only about their form, but also about the manner of wearing and the taste of individuals.
