Description The results of censuses are among the most frequently sought-after historical sources. They contain all the basic information about several spatially distributed and main population structures of the census. Due to the content and spatial detail, they are one of the main sources of information for the study of population development. The paper focuses on one of the lesser-known properly planned censuses of 1940, which followed up on 10 annual cycles of censuses, also held in Slovakia. The 1940 census was atypical. In particular, domestic political events were more pronounced in it, especially segregated national policy towards selected groups of minorities. The aim of our paper is to focus primarily on the background of the census, the methodology of preparation and implementation of the 1940 census in the context of the history of the Slovak Republic (1939–1945).
