| Description | The aim of the lecture was to present the partial results of the DECAREL project, which mapped the factors entering into the decision-making process about care at the end of life (EoL) on the part of doctors, nurses, patients and their relatives. The analysis of the statements of relatives of patients showed that among the most important aspects of EoL care from the perspective of relatives were the quality of communication with the medical staff, space for asking questions and the possibility to be with the dying person until his death. The EoL decision-making process was also examined from the perspective of doctors and nurses caring for patients at the end of life. The results show that doctors and nurses do not differ much in their assessment of the quality of the EoL decision-making process, but nurses have more differentiated opinions. The way decisions are made about EoL care at a given workplace has an impact on the overall psychological well-being and job satisfaction of health professionals. Nurses' suggestions for improving the EoL decision-making and care mainly include communication and organizational factors, which coincide with the most important aspects of EoL care reported by relatives of deceased patients. The findings point to a need to improve the professional training of doctors and medics in the area of communication with patients at the end of life. |
