Description The paper presents several cases representing the variability of pathways to success or failure in Matura. The research questions are 1. Can signals of future failure be identified in informants’ narratives? 2. What external and internal factors improve or decrease the chance for success? Structure and agency constitute the theoretical framework of the study. The structure is represented, for example, by the Maturita examination process. Maturita in the Czech Republic now includes two parts: the school and the state. The school part grew on the tradition of decentralised Matura. It is rooted mainly in an outcomes-based paradigm. The state part tends to psychometric paradigm and measurement of generic competencies. When a student considers how to prepare for the graduation exam, s/he receives a mixed signal from the system; s/he should be proven competent both by teachers and uniform state testing instruments. And here is the space for „agency“, the capacity to reach the goal using both self and social environment.
