Description The article aims to explain evidence of some sources to interpret the issues of specific types of surface treatments of Baroque sculptures during the early modern period. The study interprets the largely missing works by Johann Philipp Hieber and Anton Müller, artisans who carried out surface treatment of statues, based on several remaining agreements and bills that provide evidence of using not just standard art techniques and materials, but also deal in detail with the finishing touches done by various types of alcohol and oil-resin varnishes. In addition to the general interpretation of discovered knowledge, the study seeks to evaluate the specific environment and role of the commissioner and the investor in the process of using the given materials and technologies with respect to their interest in natural sciences.
