Citation
Description The article treats the works of the Czech novelist Jan Balabán, and Ukrainian author Oles Ulianenko. Their writing is existential, thoughtful, steeped in ideas and its characters are quite different from the characters of authors of young generation. Balabán and Ulianenko choose characters living on the edge of society, underachievers and outcasts who are in a hopeless position in their society; their souls, however, are very sensitive and perceptive. Their individual search for the meaning of life is clear-cut, often expressed in feelings of loneliness and emptiness which they overcome by turning to God and by seeking a spiritual meaning of being.
