Description The study analyses the official names of vineyards from two wine-growing sub-regions of the Czech Republic (Mikulov and Znojmo), whose current form was created by adapting the original German names. Despite standardization efforts after World War II to eliminate geographical names of German origin, many of these names have survived in spoken usage to the present day. The names are divided into several groups on the basis of German lexical components (names containing Berg-/-berg, Heide, frýd/frejd/fréd, Los/-los, and others), with an attempt to reveal the initial (German) form as well as the motivation (e.g. Šusfeldy from Schosfeld, Svidrunk from Suchentrunk, Plotny from Platten, Kolimberk from Galgenberg). The article also deals with the ways of integrating German names into Czech.
