| Description | The focus of the present paper is the traveling exhibition Georgische Kunst. Ihre Entwicklung vom 4.–18. Jahrhundert, held in 1930 in several germanophone metropoles, such as Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Nuremberg or Vienna. For the German-speaking audience (and not only) it was one of the first ever opportunities to encounter medieval art of Georgia, although exhibited mostly in photographs and monumental reproductions: the Georgian national treasure assembled and protected by Ekvtime Takaishvili (1862–1953) was indeed still kept in French exile at that time. The introduction and scientific assessment of the exhibited material fell to Giorgi Chubinashvili (1885–1973), a leading figure in the art historical research in Soviet Georgia, who was himself educated at German universities in Leipzig and Halle. The exhibition was to be the first step in strengthening cultural relations between Germany and Georgian SSR, which also included collaborative archaeological excavations. The paper thus aims to take a closer look at the organization and initiatives undertaken by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Studium Osteuropas and the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft in Soviet Georgia and their progressive decline in the political atmosphere of the 1930s. |
