Citation
Description The most important warrior of the 5th century received not only damnatio memoriae, but also a very positive response from his contemporaries (Marobaudes, Sidonius Apollinaris), but also from later authors (most notably Apollinaris Sidonius, Cassidorus Senator and Procopius). The paper further traced the perception of Aetius in medieval chronicles, in Giulio Strozzi, but also in the Baroque author Zacharias Werner, in music, painting, or in the Czech poet Svatopluk Čech. The author pointed to the French relationship to this Roman, but also to the political tendencies that his name was supposed to help promote (Venetian republicanism, the Italian Risorgimento, the call for Slavic unity, etc.). In the paper, the new translations of parts of Merobaud's panegyrics are included.
