Description | On 22 October 2022, the Vatican extended the provisional agreement between the Holy See and the Chinese government for the second time. The first time the agreement was signed in 2018 for a period of two years, and it was subsequently extended in 2020. The signing of the provisional agreement was a historic moment when the Holy See and the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) signed a mutual agreement for the first time. The exact content of the agreement remains undisclosed, but we know that the central issue is the consecration of bishops in the PRC. The agreement grants the Communist Party of China (CPC) the power to elect Catholic bishops in China, but the Holy See retains veto power. |
