Description | In 1723, in the city of Kodeń, which belonged to the noble Sapieha family, a canonical coronation of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kodeń took place. To honor this liturgical rite, Jan Fryderyk Sapieha published a manuscript, where, for the first time, a legend about Mikołaj Sapieha, nicknamed the Pious, appeared. According to the text, the Polish magnate Sapieha stole this icon from the private chapel of Pope Urban VIII in Rome. In this presentation, this story of an holy thief Sapieha underwent a critical investigation in order to decide whether this legend could be true, based on an analysis of the written sources of that time. |
