| Description | The historical novel De creche by Dutch author Elle van Rijn is based on the true story of Betty Oudkerk, who worked as a nurse in a Jewish nursery in Amsterdam during World War II. After the theatre opposite the creche was turned into a deportation centre for Dutch Jews, the creche housed children awaiting transport to a concentration camp. Betty Oudkerk, together with several colleagues, was part of an elaborate child smuggling ring. During the war, the Resistance managed to save some six hundred children from transport. The novel introduces readers to the repression of Jews during World War II and the situation in the Dutch resistance. |
