Description | The basis of this book is the handwritten personal memoirs of pianist and music teacher Eliška Nováková (née Hanousková) about her life with composer and pianist Jan Novák (1921-1984). They record both the period of their studies and later their life together in Czechoslovakia until 1968, as well as the difficult years spent in Danish, Italian and German exile. The memoir part of the book is enriched by the memories of foreign friends and pupils and an interview conducted by his daughter Clara. An extensive preface by the editors provides a more detailed account of Eliška Nováková's life based on previously known and newly acquired sources. The personal dimension of the publication is also deepened by selected photographs from the life of the Novák family. The book is a remarkable insight into the fate of Czech exiled musical artists who were forced to face two occupations, pressure from the domestic political regime and unfavourable conditions abroad during the 20th century. |
