Description | In this talk, I present novel data concerning the role of different types of multiplicatives for the distinction between event-external and event-internal quantification from a cross-linguistic perspective. In English, the very same string of symbols, e.g., *Kim knocked on the door three times*, can be ambiguous between the two types of quantification. In other languages, however, it is not always the case. For instance, Polish and Mandarin Chinese mark event-internal quantification formally via dedicated multiplicatives and distinct verbal classifiers combining with a multiplicative (e.g., Donazzan 2013, Zhang 2017), respectively. In the talk, I develop a descriptive typology of multiplicative expressions with respect to their event-external/internal properties. |
