| Description | Massive expansion of the religious confraternities and the involvement of laypeople in their ranks and activities went hand in hand with the efforts of individual societies to make their visual representation as distinctive as possible. This representation was oriented in several directions: inwards, to influence existing members, and outwards, as a signal not only to competing corporations but also to new members or supporters. It was the demand for such a “message”, reformulated into the language of images and sculptures, that became one of the key art assignments defining the final form of the artwork. The selected examples present this issue with symbols and themes related to the membership in individual Confraternities. |
