Citation
Description The monograph focuses on the theory and history of art, aesthetics and art criticism of Miroslav Tyrš (1832-1884), who is widely known as the founder and leading personality of Sokol (Falcon), but was also an art and cultural historian, aesthetician and the first professor of art history at the Czech section of Charles University in Prague. This monograph presents and analyses his extensive work, which has remained in the shadow of the gymnastics movement. However, even this movement, the community, was strongly influenced by his understanding of culture and art - Tyrš also integrated the models of ancient Greece into the Sokol and consistently searched for a renaissance of the ideal of kalokagathia. As a result, he devoted himself not only to the aesthetic theory of physical exercise and gymnastics, but also to the theory of art, and became the first Czech critic to focus exclusively on the visual arts. The book therefore attempts to present his views, scattered in a number of theoretical texts and art criticism, more comprehensively and also to place them in the context of the contemporary views from which he was inspired.
