| Description | The rise of social media in the 21st century has greatly impacted marginalised communities and social movements that fight discrimination. Access to digital technologies has opened up a new avenue for many to connect and spread ideas that overcome not only geographical, but also social and cultural barriers between different communities in society. In my paper, I focus on the use of digital technologies by activists from specific Dalit and Bahujan communities in India to analyse the role of religion and Buddhism in their anti-caste discourse. The research presented here contributes to understanding the roles of religious and secular motives in the socio-political mobilization of marginalized communities with overlapping implications for perceptions of modernity and issues of post-colonialism. Through computational text analysis via semantic network analysis of word cooccurrence and topic modelling on a corpus of blogs from the Round Table India platform, I highlight the potential transformations of the discourse of self-identification based on Dalitism and the interconnectedness of political and socio-religious aspects of Ambedkarite Buddhism. |
