Description | The murals in the Rotunda of St. Catherine in Znojmo have kept historians and art historians busy for almost two centuries. But they have also aroused the interest of the local and wider public to a degree that is unprecedented compared to other monuments of the Romanesque period. Competing scholarly narratives have thus not only had to balance each other in argument, but since the 1980s they have also responded to some extent to amateur (in the neutral and original sense of the word) alternative history. In the first part of the expert dialogue we will ask how these interactions, taking place in specific changing socio-political contexts, have marked the current state of knowledge. However, ongoing scholarship opens up possibilities for thinking through issues related to the paintings in new, broader contexts. Both in a local sense, where it is obvious that new interpretations of the findings at the St. Hypolytus fortress must lead to reinterpretations of the castle rotunda itself, and in a global sense, where it will be necessary to abandon the Czech-Moravian stereotypes burdened with positional lines and to reinscribe the whole Znojmo situation more accurately in a broad European context. |
