| Description | The lecture focused on magic, wonder and mystery in the visual culture of the early modern period. Rather than a systematic interpretation, it attempts to show through partial probes what functions and aesthetic connotations these forms were associated with - that is, how these terms were visually represented in Baroque culture. An introduction devoted to Leonardo's white magic is followed by three probes: (a) Sforza Pallavicini and Gianlorenzo Bernini's "miracle"; (b) Light and the Miraculous Mystery in Architecture; (c) The mystery of the Enlightenment in the suburban "Gegenden". |
