Description The underground gas storage Dolni Dunajovice is the largest reservoir of gas found in the Neogene foredeep (peripheral foreland basin) in Moravia. The wedge-shaped structure of the field was discovered in 1973. The southwest-northeast upthrown block of the foreland plate is on its western side bounded by the Vestonice fault, which cuts through the crystalline basement and Jurassic strata into the Miocene deposits of the foredeep. The study concerns the gas-bearing Eggenburgian basal “Dunajovice” sandstones, which lay on jurassic "Kurdejov" limestones and are sealed by the overlying Eggenburgian Clays. The actual research is built on the study of drilling cores and well-logging measurements (gamma ray, resistivity, SP). Examined are the contents of heavy minerals mainly represented by zircon, tourmaline (schorl, dravite), staurolite and rutile whose chemical composition points to probable origin from metapelites of Moravicum and the Cadomian granitic rocks of the Brno massif. These results are also compared with laboratory gamma-ray spectroscopy and geochemistry analysis, which gives an appropriate view of the quartzose sediments of mature continental provenance and humid paleoenviroment of the area of interest. In addition, the granulometry of poorly sorted sandstones is evaluated and which in combination with the variable contains of organic matter and glauconite reflects a variable sedimentation environment.
