Description In the 1830s, Lithuanian culture and literature were presented to the Czech public through translations of folk songs. This activity was motivated by a general interest in folk culture, as well as the archaic nature of the Lithuanian language in the context of Indo-European linguistics. Translations of Lithuanian folk songs were published in newspapers, magazines or collections. What impression of Lithuania and its inhabitants could be formed from the aforementioned publications? We find the answer not only in the songs themselves and their translations, but also in the introductions and comments of their publications. It is these texts that will be studied in an attempt to form a picture of Lithuania and its inhabitants at that time. This image will be further compared with the contemporary situation of Lithuanian literature in the Czech Republic.
