Description This article critically examines the concept of authenticity, which is one of the key concepts of communicative language teaching. The article begins with an overview of the debate in foreign language research from the 1970s to the present day. The discussion identifies several uncertainties and problems in the definition of authenticity. Furthermore it shows that the demand for authenticity obscures the fundamental mediality of language. The paper concludes that the value which has been placed on the concept of authenticity in the field of foreign language teachin g is extremely problematic. Instead, the article pleads for the pursuing of approaches, which give play, imagination and performativity a new value in language learning.
