| Description | Ravenna. Today a provincial northern Italian city, formerly a famous late antique metropolis and capital of the Western Roman Empire. Today, many remarkable buildings, whose walls are decorated with shining glass mosaics, bear witness to the days of its greatest glory. One of these is the Church of San Vitale, whose presbytery still displays, among other things, portraits of the Emperor Justinian, who conquered Ravenna around 540, and his wife, the Empress Theodora. To what extent did secular and ecclesiastical power intermingle in late antiquity, and was political marketing in the Middle Ages exclusively a matter for the imperial court?
