| Description | Can the 21st century be a century of great discoveries? Pliska, now a small village in eastern Bulgaria, is one of Europe's largest archaeological sites. For more than a hundred years, archaeologists have been exploring the ruins of the early medieval town, the seat of the Bulgarian khans, which exceeded even Byzantine Constantinople in size. Modern archaeological methods now make it possible to explore this lost metropolis in record time and are already yielding truly remarkable results. What treasures does Pliska actually hold? How do geophysical methods work with the "memory" of the earth and what do they help us to read from it? And what role does chance play in a researcher's career?
