Description The Basilica of San Clemente, a Roman church in the Laterano district, hides in its underground a fresco that may be surprising to the Czech viewer. The crowd of figures depict Saint Cyril, the patron saint who, according to national legend, together with his brother, brought Christianity to the Czech lands. Saints Cyril and Methodius, celebrated in our lands for centuries as brothers of the faith and patrons of the nation, were in fact primarily European intellectuals with an international outlook. What were Cyril and Methodius doing in Rome? What was the city they entered in the second half of the 9th century like? And why can the two brothers be considered, with some exaggeration, among the pioneers of archaeology? Art historian Ivan Foletti and archaeologist Jiří Macháček discuss this in another continuation of the podcast.
