Description When the Normans arrived in Sicily at the end of the 11th century - an island until then ruled by the Arabs - they were greeted by a literal paradise on earth: a pleasant climate, clean streets, public lighting, sewers and fountains. Overwhelmed by these luxuries, instead of subduing the country and expelling their defeated enemies from the island, the Normans create a unique state based on the coexistence of different cultures and ethnicities. A kingdom whose artistic production combines Islamic ornamentation, Western architectural techniques and the glowing mosaics of the Greek East. Medieval Sicily is becoming the richest country in the Mediterranean. A country that owes its rise to a phenomenon that is, for some contemporary political currents, the greatest bogeyman of our time. Multiculturalism. Why has Sicily become poorer since 1861? And what do New York in the 1980s and Palermo in the 12th century have in common? Find out in the new episode of the podcast.
