Description The year is 1793. The Abbey of Saint Denis, the pride of the French monarchs, is shaken to its foundations. Rampaging mobs of revolutionaries are destroying the statues on the portals, robbing tombs and smashing centuries-old stained glass windows. France is in its wild nineties, and medieval monuments are becoming a lightning rod for the frenzied mood of society. For what reason did the followers of the Great French Revolution target the Basilica of Saint Denis? Why is this building traditionally considered the first example of Gothic architecture? And why, according to the authors of the podcast, should we be rather cautious with such claims? For the answers to these questions, join us in Paris in July, where archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti recorded the 28th episode of the podcast.
