Description | Gaius Vettius Aquilinus Juvencus, the 4th century author of the epic Evangeliorum libri quattuor, is primarily known as the founder of the literary genre of biblical epic, by means of which early Christian writers tried to equal classical literature represented by the epics of Homer and Virgil. His work, however, is not to be regarded as a mere versification of the Gospel. Apart from various stylistic additions it also contains the additions of theological nature, by which the poet tries to specify and elaborate upon the original text in the spirit of literal, allegorical or moral exegesis. This, together with his attempt to explain Jewish religious traditions and to justify Christ’s tragical death upon the cross by predestination, creates a brief but theologically not inconsiderable exegetic apparatus, which can be termed theologia supplementaris. |
