Description The essay recounts an unrealised invasion during the Great Northern War in the immediate vicinity of the Habsburg Monarchy, when in 1706–1707 the Swedish army drove through Saxony and immediately threatened the lands of the Crown of St. Wenceslas. Their ruler – Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I – escaped from a complicated situation thanks to his excellent diplomat, Johann Wenzel Wratislaw von Mitrowitz. In dramatic negotiations with the Swedes, he managed to avert a military incursion into the hereditary lands literally at the last moment, so that the siege for which Prague had already to prepare never actually occurred. The article clarifies the political situation and the course of negotiations, including the remarkable consequences that the bilaterally signed Treaty of Altranstädt had for the religious life of Silesia. With the help of documents of the royal vicegerency, the work also addresses the events from the perspective of the participants from Bohemia for the first time.
