Description The article deals with the diaphasic and diastratically marked lexicon present in the novel Vida y hechos del famoso caballero D. Catrín de la Fachenda (1832), by José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi. The handling of literary works for the history of popular and marginal speech is methodologically problematic, but it can be solved by applying the apparatus of historical pragmatics (Oesterreicher 2004), complemented, in turn, by typographical criteria, such as uses of italics to mark the argot lexicon, or by paraphrases and explanations in the text, as we have verified in Buzek (2017). On this occasion we are going to continue in the same line of research applying the methodological filters with the necessary adaptations, if the work requires it. Our main objective is to go on studying relevant documents -literary and non-literary- for the history of marginal speech in Spanish in America in general and in Mexico in particular in order to be able to offer an overview from now on.
