Description | Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Russia (and its fate) has been frequently mentioned in the Czech public space. In general terms, it can be stated that, given the circumstances, this is a very critical reflection that radically condemns the Russian Federation (and often its people). However, criticism and description of the reality of the Russian Federation often remain at the level of stereotypes, which confirm our prejudices but no longer help to truly understand (not only) the current situation. This exhibition, on the other hand, wants to try something different: we would like to reflect on the roots of current Russia through the unbiased perspective of Dana Kyndra. She has been documenting life in the USSR and subsequently in the Russian Federation for more than 40 years. Through the lens of her camera, she has thus managed to record the events of everyday life which, in our opinion, represent (and explain) the current situation better than many a journalistic commentary. From the tragic social situation of the 1990s to the gradual interconnection between the throne and the altar, Dana Kyndrova shows us what lies beneath the surface of Russian official rhetoric and representation. The photographs in this intimate exhibition also capture the fall of the USSR and the nostalgia that the past awakens in the contemporary citizens of the Russian Federation. The title of the exhibition, "Russia the Powerful and the Powerless", is thus meant to highlight the fact that what is out of the spotlight can tell us much more about Russia today than any war propaganda. |
