| Description | The paper presents an analysis of selected Czech broadside ballads published in printing houses in Olomouc, Litomyšl, Chrudim, and Jihlava from the beginnings of Czech broadside ballads production in the 1640s to the 1860s. The study is based on complete transliterations of 88 individual printings. It focuses on the development of competing capitalized forms for Czech phonemes /č/, /ř/, /ž/ (IPA /?/, /r?/, /?/): digraphic ( čest), digraphic-diacritic ( člověk), diacritic (<Ča?to> často), or simple/positional ( živ). The paper shows: 1. Before 1800, there is an obvious difference between capitalized forms for /ž/, which is predominantly diacritic (<Ž>), and /č/, /ř/, which are predominantly digraphic-diacritic (, ). 2. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the diacritic forms <Č>, <Ř>, <Ž> for /č/, /ř/, /ž/ prevail. 3. Throughout the period analyzed, the distribution of the non-diacritic form for /ž/ is influenced by particular typefaces. |
