Citation
Description Conference paper will deal with the ancient conception of music as the liberal art, especially with the contribution of the Aurelius Augustine to this field, as we find it in the sic books about rhythm of the unfinished text On music (De musica). I will clarify the specifics of the ancient intellectual context, in which the concept of music has another (broader) sense than the current Czech term "hudba" or the English term "music", and I will refer to the important points of the Augustine's text. Step by step, I will concentrate on the aspects of the aesthetic perception (cognition, creativity) and on the questions of the (artistic and other) representation. I will try to demonstrate that Augustine's perspective is not only the "overcame" matter of the history of thought or one of many episodes in ints framework, but that it can prove beneficial even in the current times.
