Description | Rembrandt's contribution to etching lies not only in innovative compositions and treatment of subjects but above all in experiments with etching and drypoint techniques. His chiaroscuro etchings with a unique spontaneous style of lines and innovative technological procedures became characteristic of his oeuvre which were then imitated both by his direct followers and by artists of the eighteenth century. Mainly in Central Europe, Rembrandt's style was very popular at this time. Response to his artworks can be found for example in the works of C.W.E. Dietrich, G.F. Schmidt, B.I. Weiss or Kremser Schmidt and a number of others. However, it was not a mindless copying of the master's work, but mainly an effort to transform his compositions or typology of characters into inventive graphic sheets. They also drew lessons from a careful study of his technological procedures, with which they wanted to match, or at least approach, Rembrandt's master style. |
