Description | The article focuses on recurring sculptural decorations of the “Romanesque” tympana of the churches located on medieval pilgrimage routes to Santiago. The iconographic variations of the image of Christ are considered in the frame of anthropological studies and psychological experiments in order to reflect on another level of the “power” of the image, namely, the meaning generated by the repeated use of an image and the effect that its recurring presence was able to generate in the pilgrim’s mind. Such an anthropological approach aims to contribute to the art historical discussion on the fundamental role of human body, with its sensory experience in perception of objects of art. |
