Description The paper focuses on the issue of collaboration between the lay Catholic organization Opus bonum, founded by Czech exiles in Germany in 1972, and the Ackermann-Gemeinde, founded by Germans displaced from Sudetenland after World War II. Despite their differences, especially about political involvement, the collaboration was a promising development. However, the relationships between both organizations were complicated by the Czech Spiritual Administration in Germany, which insisted upon being the dominant voice in activities for the Czech exile people, while perceiving the Ackermann-Gemeinde as an unsuitable partner. By the same token, the Czech Spiritual Administration fundamentally influenced the financial support without which Opus bonum could not exist. In the years 1972-1979 some disputes were of existential importance for Opus Bonum. The phenomenon described here points to the discontinuity between modern and traditional social institutions.
