Description Cicero was already one of the most important Roman orators during his lifetime. His speeches are distinguished both by their sophisticated argumentation and their rich vocabulary, but his most distinctive rhetorical device is his ability to address his audience "ut moveatur vehementius" (Cic. Brut. 49, 185), or his persuasive, not infrequently manipulative power. The aim of this talk is to analyze Cicero's persuasive and manipulative strategy with the tools of modern theory, in particular his ability to mark the public enemy, and to compare Cicero's formal and informal speeches, i.e. speeches and letters, with the formal and informal speeches of the contemporary political, especially populist, scene.
