Description The Roma have been an integral part of the ethnic makeup of Slovakia for several centuries, yet little is known about the population history and population development of this in many aspects unique ethnic group. One of the reasons for that is the general lack of historical sources which could offer at least a partial answer to these questions. The 1893 census which sought to map the Roma population in Hungary is therefore a veritable treasure trove of information on the Roma in late 19th century which, properly utilized, can provide a number of insights into the ethnic group within its wider historical and geographic context. In this paper, we provide a preliminary overview of the census itself and use its data to analyze selected population characteristics of the Roma population in the territory of modern-day Slovakia.
