Description | Aesthetic evaluation can be considered largely subjective, so how do we know which judgment carries more weight? How is it possible that some viewers fail to perceive a particular work of art as "masterpiece" even though it is so "generally" understood? Is it more likely that poor aesthetic taste or a lack of understanding of the meaning of the work that causes the erroneous aesthetic judgment? And is any knowledge or training a prerequisite for competent aesthetic judgment? The perception of the aesthetic qualities of a visual work of art is accessible to any ordinary viewer. Even if the viewers know nothing about the work, they can draw a powerful aesthetic experience from it. Is it possible, then, to prefer the opinion of experts to that of the ordinary viewer in visual art? In this paper, we will try to answer these questions in relation to the theory of Tomáš Kulka and Kendall Walton. |
