Description Comics are most often defined as a certain combination of images and words in one narrative medium (Abbot 1986). Despite the development of transmedia narratology (Ryan 2004), verbal or literary narrative still seems to be dominant in theoretical and research reflection, at least. However, since the beginning of the development of comics, works that do not work with a verbal component at all are represented in a not insignificant number. These stories are told only through images (textless panels) and the relationships between them. The authors of these works thus create a specific poetics that can be thematized/contextualized, for example, in relation to the traditions of silent film or photographic reportage series, or image cycles in visual art. This paper will present selected works of "silent"/wordless comics, which will attempt to show the basic communicative and aesthetic principles of telling visual stories without words.
