Description The mutual influence of urban and traditional clothing is a common phenomenon not only in Slovakia but also in other European countries. Several factors have influenced this. In the territory of present-day Slovakia, it is mainly related to the efforts to create a national dress in the 2nd half of the 20th century. 19th century. Traditional clothing and its elements, used in the urban environment in connection with the economic-political situation in the second half of the 19th century, had an important national-representational and demonstrative significance. The present paper aims to briefly describe the different variants of national clothing and the processes of their creation. The wearing, or rather the effort to apply elements of traditional clothing in the wardrobes of the nationally conscious Slovak intelligentsia, gave rise to several stylised forms of traditional clothing. However, completely new forms of clothing were also created, only inspired by the traditional ones. Some, such as shirts with embroidered breastplates, became so popular that, apart from the urban environment, they also established themselves in the traditional clothing of the rural population. Little attention has been paid to this topic in the Slovak literature, and so the paper seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the history of clothing in Slovakia.
