| Description | Moral character (ethos) is a very old concept whose philosophical contours, as well as its connection with the completion of human life, can be found in antiquity. Probably by lucky coincidence, Aristotle, a disciple of Plato, and his ethical writings are primarily associated with this concept. The author of this book is proceeding from the conviction that this ethical doctrine is a neglected family jewels of our civilization, and he notes contemporary interdisciplinary efforts to revive it through an updating of the very concept of moral character. The intention here is to critically examine these efforts, that is, to consider whether they are missing the mark, while at the same time systematizing them. Central to this purpose are the subsection defining the function of Aristotle’s ethical doctrine and the entire third chapter, which contains five criteria of an adequate actualization. The second chapter, which analyzes the concepts of Aristotle’s ethical doctrine and their interrelations, provides the basis for the following discussions. The fourth chapter is then devoted to a critical examination of specific proposals for actualization, with increased attention to the prominent “skill analogy”. In the last, fifth chapter, the author develops a typology of actualizations and presents his own outline for actualizing moral character. |
