Description Completed cohort fertility in Slovakia has a long-term downward trend, which was also confirmed by the results of the last Population and Household Census 2021. In the cohorts of women born in the 1970s, the average number of children fell significantly below the treshold of 2 children. An important factor behind these changes is the transformation of the parity structure. The main goal of the paper is to identify the impact of changes in parity progression ratios on the inter-cohort decline in realized fertility in Slovakia in a long-term perspective using the selected decomposition method. The analysis confirmed a continuous decrease in cohort fertility in Slovakia significantly below the limit of 2 children per woman. The results of the decomposition pointed to the dominant effect of the decrease in the probabilities of having children of higher order on the reduction of cohort fertility in older cohorts. In the younger cohorts, the main factor is the reduction of the probabilities of having second children.
