Description | The chapter is devoted to the social and cultural life in Židlochovice during the so-called First and Second Republic. It focuses at the most important societes that contributed to the local culture and social life of the public - Sokol, the District Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Red Cross, etc. He also reflects on the most important social events which, thanks to the frequent visits of the first czechoslovak President, TOmás G. Masaryk (who spent his holidays here at the local chateau), which became regular events of paramount importance not only for the town but for the whole country. It also deals with partial state visits that took place here (e.g. visits of the Romanian king in the 1930s. The chapter also looks at amateur theatre, cinema, sport and the informal table societies that were active here. It also deals with German social and the cultural life of the German inhabitants of Židlochovice, which declined considerably after 1918. |
