Description The lecture focussed on the murals by Johann Georg Etgens (1691-1757) in the Benedictine monastery church in Rajhrad (Raigern near Brno) and in the pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary's name in Křtiny (Kiritein), which were designed by Johann Blasius Santini-Aichl (1677-1723). Although Santini did not originally include wall paintings in his projects, Etgens created wall paintings of exceptional artistic quality and unique content in Rajhrad (1726-1729) and Křtiny (1745-1747) - naturally in collaboration with the patrons - and thus achieved an unexpectedly impressive interpretation of Santini's church architecture. In the lecture, the Etgens' paintings were presented in the context of buildings, with particular attention being paid to the function of the paintings and their meaning within an exclusive, unprecedentedly complex ideological programme.
